Expert tips to make your house feel larger instantly

Creating the illusion of more space in your home is not as hard as you think.  You don’t have to tear down walls and renovate; there are a few tweaks you can try to make your space feel larger.

Start with a good foundation by using a large area rug.  Believe it or not, a larger rug makes the room feel bigger. Size it almost to room size but measure to make sure all your furniture will fit on the rug and that you don’t have to turn to pass by. If you are replacing the flooring, run it in the direction of the length of the room to achieve the appearance of a larger space. Use furniture that is appropriately scaled to the size of your room. Too much furniture or too large sized items will make the room feel small. Many retailers offer apartment size sofas and smaller furnishings. Also, multifunction, modular items such as nesting tables will work well.

Make sure your window treatments are hung just under the ceiling and kiss the floor to give the illusion of height.  Have them overlap to make the windows look larger.  A floor mirror strategically placed to reflect light can make the space feel more open. Finally, instead of displaying a collection of small accessories that can make a space feel cluttered, use larger accessories. We like the rule of three when displaying accessories.
