You have likely heard; “the kitchen is the heart of the home”. Take it a step further and the island is the heart of the kitchen. This one element has to multi-task by being functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable all while accommodating everyone who uses the kitchen.
- Durable countertops – Since island countertops are typically a large surface in the room, the material used is very important. The material, color and style of the countertop must complement the kitchen and overall home aesthetic as well as stand up to constant use. Also, keep in mind, if a range or range top is incorporated into the island, a quartz material may not be the best choice due to less heat resistance. The color on these can be same or different than the rest of the kitchen.
- Smart storage – Storage on the island can be maximized by including rollouts inside the cabinets and doors. If your range is on the island, put your spice drawer next to it for greater efficiency. Some of your smaller appliances can be located on the island such as a beverage cooler or ice maker. The island is a good spot for a waste bin pull out. If you have the room, include your recycle bin or compost bin next to the waste bin for efficient use of the space. Keep in mind that although a waterfall countertop is a popular and beautiful feature, it does reduce both storage space and seating.
- Sustainable materials – Sustainable and eco-friendly materials are becoming increasingly popular in kitchen design. Homeowners are using recycled materials such as glass and terrazzo and reclaimed wood in their kitchen island finishes. Including a compost bin in the kitchen island is also helpful to encourage the recycling of food waste. Incorporating an apron sink into your island design is not only beautiful but has major ergonomic benefits. Using energy star appliances and low flow faucets will also add to environmentally conscious choices.
- Soft-close drawers – This feature has become a standard and a must have on all cabinet doors and drawers on the kitchen island – and in the entire kitchen!
- Room for the whole family – Make sure a single island has a slab large enough for the entire family – the bigger the better. This space provides for dining, casual conversations and even homework. You may have to buy smaller stools to give everyone a seat. If your family is greater than four, consider doing a double island and using one island as a casual dining space.
While trends can provide inspiration, it’s essential that your kitchen island reflect your personal preferences and the specific needs of your family. Tailoring your island to your lifestyle will ensure it serves you well for years to come.
