Decluttering Advice for Small Spaces

Decluttering is a challenging but necessary exercise, especially if you have a small space. To master this task, set clear goals about what you want to achieve in the space.  Knowing your objectives will make it easier to decide what to keep and what to let go.

First of all, only keep things that you love! This is where you live, and it should reflect only what is important to you. If you find it hard to eliminate things, try these small space tips to better organize:

  • Choose a media console that has doors enclosing the storage space.
  • Use decorative trays to collect things that you need to use often. A catchall on the entry table works visual wonders for keys, dog leashes, etc.
  • Trays! Again, a great way to organize your coffee table to store things like remotes, candles, a cute box of matches, wick trimmer, etc.
  • Use a vintage trunk as a bed bench or coffee table to add extra space for storage
  • Choose side tables and nightstands that have drawers or closing doors to neatly store items
  • You can run electrical cords under your rug and for the loose and visible cords, utilize a cord organization gadget (i.e. command strips or zip ties) so that your space does not have a messy feel
  • The ‘Rule of Three’ always helps to make a space feel less cluttered. Don’t put more than three decorative items on one surface to avoid overcrowding. Consider rotating some of your favorite things throughout the year rather than having everything displayed all at once.
  • Do you have beach bags or straw totes?  Store your beach towels, sunscreen, hats or other items in these bags for a functional and fashionable display.
  • Shoes scattered around the room can really clutter up a space. To solve this problem, find a cabinet with closing doors to put at your entry, for shoe storage.
  • Make sure you love everything in your home! If you don’t, ditch it and be on the lookout for things you do… there is no rush, take your time to make your home full of only beautiful things!

Decluttering is a continual challenge. By trying a few of these tips, you can create a more functional and enjoyable living space in your small area.
