In my firm’s experience, a minimalist workspace is not as much of a design preference as it is a necessity, especially for client’s that work remotely. Not everyone has a dedicated office space where they can close the door on the workday clutter. We have designed workspaces that are distinct but part of the overall design of the room. We had the challenge recently of combining an office space with the living area. We did this by paying attention to the following:
- Make sure the design is cohesive, so the workspace does not stand out from the rest of the décor. Choose similar colors in furniture, upholstery and artwork
- Hang a large format piece of art to simplify and unify the design
- Use solids or minimize the print fabrics
- Use decorative light fixture over the desk to define the space
- Incorporate useful items into the accessories like books, timepieces or magnifying glass
- Work on technology cord management
- Use small arrangements of fresh flowers or a plants
- Add a mirror to reflect light and magnify the design
